University Housing Services at East Carolina University in Greenville, North Carolina, promoted living on campus through a small magazine for students. While on staff as a copywriter/strategist at Semaphore, an ad agency in Columbia, South Carolina, I worked as the account manager, writer and editor for Campus Living. Previously the magazine was done in-house, and the staff felt it wasn’t keeping up with the style students were used to in “real” magazines. My mission, along with an agency art director, was to recreate the magazine so that it would blend on the magazine rack at Barnes and Noble. The redesign was so successful that students often asked the price of the magazine, not realizing it was a free university publication.
